good morning, i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. rosemary is tracking your weather. >> yes, a nice day. mostly clear, a little cool. some of us are a lot cooler. some of us not so much. it has to do with the winds i'm seeing in the hills and around the bay area. by the afternoon the winds will relax. the temperatures will be warmer that be what we were yesterday. i'll show you by how much and the reason behind these winds and when i expect they will go away coming up. and with the start of the daytona 500 just hours away, nascar says that drivers will start their engines as planned despite a big wreck in the final lap of the sprint cup series yesterday that caused major damage at the speedway. >> we met with nascar at 8:00 a.m. we reviewed all the repairs we made last evening. we worked late into the evening and we're prepared to go racing today. >> just a short time ago the daytona international president

said that crews spent the night fixing a damaged fence that is used to protect fans. people who have tickets in that area will be reseated if they request it. there was a crash yesterday with fans jumping out of their seats that has everyone talking about fan safety. and the elk grove native, flying into the fence, sending a tire and large pieces of debris right into the crowd. the crash happened when smith intended to block the other driver. fans are now speaking out about the incident. >> there was a wreck and they got hit by the part of the engine with a broken leg. >> all the fans injured, they are expected to survive, but many fans are concerned that the fence, which is dying to protect fans didn't do his job.

daytona speedway officials say they replaced the fence in 2010 and they passed a safety inspection. the raceway said that they will now sit down with nascar to review what went wrong. now minutes after the crash, witnesses uploaded their cell phone videos to youtube, but nascar had it blocked. the flurry of activity with the social media users who recorded and spread the video before being pulled. you can see the fans right there and the race car tire left in their stands. releasing a statement saying that the video was blocked out of respect for the injured. now remember you can watch them run wide at the daytona 500 right here following mornings on 2. at 8:30 this morning, fusion evolution. a program that looks at the unveiling of the new gen 6 cars. starting at 9:00, live coverage from daytona. pope benedict xvi gave his final blessing at the vatican before his resignation, officially stepping down on

thursday. alex savage is live with more on some of the controversy surrounding the process to find his replacement. alex? >> reporter: the church's sexual abuse scandal could certainly play a role in the selection process moving forward. today, catholics around the world and here in the bay area are honoring pope benedict xvi as he steps down just days later on this week. earlier on this morning, the outgoing pope gave his final blessing at the vatican. >> yes, guys, they are right there. >> the 85-year-old spoke from his studio window addressing a huge crowd that packs st. peter square. estimated at roughly 100,000 people. the pope spoke in a clear, strong voice thanking the faithful for their closeness and affection and tried to reassure catholics that he is not abandoning the church. he'll be stepping down on thursday. the first pope to do so in 600 years. and then soon the search for the next pope will begin. a conclave of 120 cardinals

will vote in vote on benedict'ssuccessor. >> we ask that you deliver this on to the cardinal that he excused himself from the upcoming table complex. >> one of those voting cardinal, roger mahoney is facing a backlash on his handling of a sexual abuse allegation andpedophile priests. they called him to excuse himself from the conclave. many of those protesters are from snap, the survivor networks of those abused by priests. there's been no date chosen for the conclave as the cardinals hope to have a new pope chosen by this easter. coming up at 7:30, we hope to hear from parishioners at st. mary's cathedral. folks will begin arriving shortly. we hope to hear from them about the pope's final blessing and the selection process for his

successor. live this morning in san francisco, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. in overnight news a fire in san francisco's lower hate neighborhood leaves six people without a place to live. the fire started at 11:30. one firefighter told us that they initially went to the wrong street, taking them longer to get to the scene. three units were damaged. no one home at the time and no injuries. the cause of that fire is still under investigation, but we're told it does not appear to be suspicious. and now on the other incident in san francisco, they had to break the window as you could hear that. they did that to rescue a man from the burning building. this is video that was sent to us by a ktvu viewer. the fire started inside a kitchen on the second home of the floor. the man pulled out of the building suffered smoke inhalation and rushed to the hospital. arson investigators were called to the scene, but no word yet if that fire was set intentionally. no reports of any damage

from the earthquake in the east bay overnight. a magnitude quake hit at 1:55 this morning. the tremor was about four miles deep. we want to update you on a story that we first reported for you. they are revealing surveillance video in hopes of catching a gunman in oakland saturday morning. and these are exclusive pictures of the damage as you can see the bullets blew out the rear window of the bus. ac transit said that they have between 6 to 8 cameras recording in and outside their buses. >> and it is hard to figure out exactly what was going through this person's mind. why anybody would do such a thing that is a little bit beyond comprehension. the bus driver was hired several months ago, dropping off a group of teens with no problems. but then he says that one of them shot at the bus as they took off. there were nine passengers and the bus suffered minor injuries after falling out of their seats when the driver sped away

after hearing those gunshots. all right, well it's a little cool outside, but it is shaping up to be a beautiful day, delivering great weather for the parade last night so no complaints. >> yeah. so we're looking at an even better day for today. we'll be a little warmer. the winds are going to die down by the afternoon and we'll see plenty of sunshine. we're seeing it already and 15 minutes or so here for them and ago. and not that easy for me to say. giving you a live look outside from ktvu and away from the background there, the city of san francisco. mostly blue skies. a beautiful start for the day. a lot drier this morning than what you started yesterday morning. take a look at some of these wind gusts. most of us, they were not able to fill or see this, but the winds are blowing them 51 miles per hour. 21 at atlas peak and big rock and 20 miles per hour in the oakland hills. here closer to where we reside, 15, and 9 in santa rosa and oakland. so enough to stir some of that air out there.

and in napa a lot warmer than santa rosa. take a look at when's happening here. they are 39 degrees with just a very light breeze and calm over at the airport. 47 in napa where i just showed you that breeze. and so again there is evidence there when you have that wind it will help to prevent that cold air from kind of sinking right there along the valley floor. 37 in concord. 37 in walnut creek. so a chillier start in many areas. you're 10 degrees cooler than yesterday morning. around the bay area, widespread, mid-40s to the lower 50s. so not bad outside your door. if i back up this way, look at the pattern here. so there's the system that brought us a few sprinkles early yesterday morning. and now well off to the east. we have a ridge beginning to build on in. as it strengthens, the wind will begin to decrease and that will happen later on today. right now we still remain with a pretty good grade. and that is what's continuing our morning breeze. so in a nutshell sunny skies today. breeze for the morning hours. we'll see a warmer afternoon as the ridge begins to gain

control over the bay area. it's going to help warm us up. 64 degrees here. 62 san rafael. mid-60s for concord. down in the south bay you have a nice one in stored for you. low 60s for santa cruz in the afternoon. extended forecast here, so we have a couple of weak systems that will not bring us any rain, but will bring down the ridge just a little bit on monday. tuesday it begins to rebound. wednesday, another dip. and take a look at thursday. mid to upper 60s in the forecast. we look to be dry for the rest of february. back to the desk. well, other than they arrested five juveniles, the san francisco police report no major problems at last night's chinese new year's parade. well that was certainly one of the highlights, the traditional dragon day. they include them swaying to

down for revenge, blaming the father, a former los angeles police captain for not helping them get back their job with the department. and today's service begins at 11:00 this morning at the university where they used to attend. the u.s. state department is now involved in the search for two bay area residents who disappeared in peru. >> it's upsetting. and you know, it's about both of them. >> reporter: they both left the bay area in november for a bike trek through south america. the couple has chronicled their travels through facebook, but the photo is in status update stopped on january 25. last seen just one day later getting into a cab in lima. the sister is hopeful that the couple is okay, but fears that something may have happened to them. >> i hope that she is just having a blast. and they're doing what they went to do, you know?

>> reporter: earlier this month they issued a warning to the american tourists about a potential kidnapping threat. the u.s. state department said that they have put out a poster of the missing couple. they have set up a reward fund. john kerry begins his first overseas trip today as secretary of state. he'll visit nine countries in ten days. he'll also tour the middle east with stops in egypt and saudi arabia. including the ongoing conflicts here in syria and afghanistan and iran's nuclear program. in march he'll visit israel and other territories with president obama. after a week-long vacation, he'll return to washington tomorrow in the face of a major budget battle. it'll kick in on friday and government officials say so too will $85 billion in automatic federal spending cuts. they predict that they will be

too far apart for a deal that both sides might be able to push back the sequester by agreeing to a few spending cuts. programs like medicaid and social security are exempt from the sequester, but the military operations would lose $13.5 billion. the fbi, half a billion, and nasa, $1 billion. the obama administration says that children will suffer among the most. a head start that could lose about $400 million, meaning that 70,000 children would be kicked out of the program. and that sequester will be on the minds of the nation's governors when they head to the white house tonight. president obama and the first lady will hold the annual governor's dinner. right now the governors are making appearances on the talk show circuit to talk about their repercussions on the across-the-board budget cuts. gary brown is in washington this weekend and not just focused on the sequester, but turning his attention to the new health care law. he's been talking to the other state leaders about the best

way to extend coverage. and he is going to attend tonight's dinner and then will join the other governors for a meeting tomorrow. a stretch of the highway in san diego has been renamed in honor of the airmen. a 3-mile stretch of interstate 15 near the air station here is now known as the airmen highway. they fought in world war ii and where the first african american pilot to serve in the u.s. military. seven former airmen attended that highway signing the unveiling ceremonies this weekend. >> yes, they were not good. they were not better. and they were the best. they were the best this country could produce. >> the state legislature unanimously endorsed the highway dedication in august. the former president jimmy carter is visiting the bay area today. holding the lecture at the san francisco commonwealth club called the challenges here of the super power. they will reflect on some of

the difficulties he faced during his presidency including an energy crisis in a troubled relationship with iran. tickets for the event are sold out. republicans are urging president obama to move forward with the keystone xl pipeline. it would pump oil from their tar sands to the gulf of mexico for refining. the obama administration rejected a permit for the pipeline a year ago because it was still undecided on the alternate route. since then the new route has been aced and the republicans say that the project would boost the u.s. economy and help produce that there. a secret tunnel connecting arizona and mexico, they are now boarded up. the tunnel was discovered yesterday during a border sweep. the opening was in mexico just west of the arizona port of entry, extending five feet into the territory here and still in the process of being built. the mexican authorities have arrested a man they found digging the route as they believe it was going to be used to smuggle drugs. oscar pistorius isn't the only one in his family facing

charges for a woman's death. the lawyer said that oscar's brother, carl, is being accused of homicide for the 2010 death of a female motorcyclist. carl was driving wrecklessly when that accident happened. his trial is scheduled for the end of march. oscar's isn't set to begin until june. and the former notre dame linebacker manti te'o is over the embarrassment of the fake girlfriend fiasco. >> it's just trying to get your thoughts right. everyone is chaos for a little bit and you let the chaos die down and wait until everybody is ready to listen. >> he talked to reporters yesterday at the scouting combines where players worked out before the april draft. he is just looking to move forward. brought up to care about people, which made him an easy target, falling for a hoax about an imaginary girlfriend who was dying. well, we are just hours away from hollywood's biggest night, the last-minute press at the oscars and a local party raising money for a good cause.

plus, as we celebrate the best, we also acknowledge the worse. the movie and the actor who won those dreaded honors last night. and abundant sunshine on the path for the warmer weather in the afternoon. we'll take a look coming up.

some of the best picture nominees include "lincoln," "argo" and "silver linings playbook," which won best picture in last night's spirits award. san francisco will also get a taste of glitz and glamour with what is built as the largest hollywood party. holding their 33rd annual oscar viewing party at the gallery tonight. raising money to combat hiv and aids. hollywood's worse was also recognized last night. breaking dawn part ii was named the worse picture of the year. which is a spoof of the oscars. the final installment in the twilight series got seven awards including worse actress for kristin stewart and taylor lockner. and in columbia, they have taken on a new role for the surrogate mother. the baby monkey, you see them, only five inches long, weighing just a quarter of a pound. the 55-year-old wildlife center

will care for them 24 hours a day, feeding him from a syringe. during the day she carries him around in a wolf pouch. they found the 5-day-old monkey on the side of the highway just a few weeks ago. san francisco's sixth annual polar plunge raised $350,000 for the special olympics of northern california. [ cheering ] no hesitation there. dozens of teens participated from jumping into the chilly bay area in full costume. the money they raised will be supporting the training and the upcoming games for the special olympics program, even in the san francisco police chief took the plunge. >> and you've got 1,000 people here that are to boot. i mean, the fact about your heart being in the right place. and they were among those who braved the fridged waters. >> yes, that is cold.

pope benedict xvi gives his final sunday blessing as he gets ready to resign. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. good morning everyone, i'm mike mibach. the pope will officially step down on thursday. ktvu alex savage live for us this morning outside st. mary's cathedral with more on his reaction to his final busing as well as the future of the catholic church. alex? >> yeah, that's the way that a lot of parishioners here at st. mary's have been talking about. the future of the catholic church that are looking forward to it as they hear the final blessing this morning. and a mass is just getting underway right now and we have been seeing quite a few people coming into the church right

parishioners about again, the pope's final sunday blessing that he gave today just days before stepping down. live this morning in san francisco, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. and there is a man hunt going on in las vegas for the gunman accused of killing an oakland rap artist. las vegas police say that they believe the 26-year-old harris shot at a maserati on the strip thursday morning. the luxury car driven by kenneth cherry jr. then slammed into a cab, which burst into flames. cherry and the two people in the taxi were killed. cherry's father says his son was an innocent victim. >> he was a victim just like any other victim that is being attempted to be carjacked or did something wrong or they were jealous of my son. >> cherry's father disputes reports that his son carried a gun in his car. investigators say they have located the suspect's car, a black range rover found in an apartment complex just a few blocks away from the strip.

a turnaround for gun buyback was so huge that the event had to be cut short. police officers collected 355 firearms including 11 assault weapons yesterday. someone even turned in a grenade in a plastic bag. raising about $200,000 for that event, but up to $300 given out per weapon. that cash quickly ran out. >> and we had originally expected that event here to last about four hours. remarkably that we had to cut this off after two hours and 40 minutes due to the amount of tremendous support that we got from this community, bringing the firearms on forward. >> and the buyback was organized by the city's parks here. the non-profit groups donated money for the goal. their goal is to find out how effective gun buybacks are. in the meantime gun control advocates, including the raging

grannies rallied in favor of stricter gun restrictions. she supports the banned on assault weapons and high capacity magazines and as well as universal background checks. bay area mc hammer is using twitter to talk about the recent arrest in dublin. this is the 50-year-old's booking photo here. the alameda county sheriff's office said that hammer was booked for obstructing an officer. released from jail on thursday night. and now according to cnn, hammer was in a car. he did not own that had an expired registration. when they tapped on the window and asked if he was on parole or probation. he tweeted, "i will not answer his question contrary to his personal beliefs all people of color are not on probation or parole." and an eye opener for his many friends and colleagues. hammer is due in court next

month. electrical workers are at a burn unit. they were working when a circuit panel caught fire. suffering first and second-degree burns on 30% of their body. prosecutors have a few days before the statute of limitation runs out in a case involving the electrocution of a pg&e worker. 26-year-old utility lineman martinez died in march of 2010 while working on an underground volt. they blamed pg&e for failing to protect their employees. the utility is currently fighting a $176,000 fan. martinez's girlfriend tells the chronical she wants pg&e held accountable potentially facing criminal charges. pg&e says they have increased training and insists that the company is committed to worker safety. well, we are now learning

that two scuba divers who died off the county coast were a husband and wife. they were found at a popular diving destination at point level state park on friday. they were both taken to the hospital, but could not be revived. investigators still don't know what went wrong, but they say there are a lot of accidents at that diving spot every year. anyone that has gone to a racecar race in sonoma know that getting to and from the track could be gridlock. now they have a new transportation. the raceway is hoping to add a train ride to the foot of the raceway when nascar rolls in on june 23. the idea still needs final approval from federal state and transportation agency. the capital corridor would provide the training leaving from san francisco. thousands of people are expected to pack into san francisco's china town for the final day of the community street fair. the event is in its 24th year. people are encouraged to participate in the chinese

the pacific satellite showing you why. and a ridge of high pressure is beginning to strengthen over to the east pacific, slowly shifting our way. and they will remain under the north glow as you can see it right there. some of the high clouds are spilling in to california and that is really going to be about it. the system that brought us the cool down, the breezy weather, they are continuing to shift to the east. over lake tahoe that the snow is gone and they will remain through about 10:00 this morning. and not to be aware of it if you plan on doing some skiing, they will expire a little bit later on. for us here at home, the winds continue to blow, but mainly in the hills i'm seeing it. 51 miles per hour gusting. and 27 atlas peak. and big rock, they are reporting anywhere from 25 miles per hour or so and to 30. so a little breezy in the hills. most of us are not feeling it or seeing it. but helping to keep the temperatures up this morning in many areas. and right here where we reside, winds are blowing to 15 miles per hour in napa. 9 in santa rosa with the partly

cloudy skies over parts of the north bay. oakland reporting 9 miles per hour. and calm conditions in livermore. making a difference in many cases. 37 degrees here in concord. and so with a light breeze, mostly sunny skies. it is 37 degrees. that's a lot keel than what we were yesterday morning in your neighborhood. 47 in napa. and so in napa, not so bad with that breeze blowing. keep it in mind 37 degrees and a breeze will still chill your bones. it's brisk out there. widespread at 30s. 38 in pleasanton. as the system continues to push to the east, we will continue to see the warm up and the dry conditions. a ridge of high pressure will be in place through the rest of the week and that means we're not going to see any rain. take a look here. the systems will continue to pass on through overhead. not touching california. and so we will be high and dry for the next few days. widespread in the upper 50s to the low to mid-60s. 65 san jose. 64 in oakland and santa rosa and your extended forecast is

showing you what i showed you a moment ago as we're going to be dry and mild and widespread in the mid-60s for your forecast on wednesday and even warmer on thursday. i'll take a look at your lunchtime numbers coming up. new security measures could soon be in place of the schools in the valley. some of the improvements will include adding new fences, entry points, and standardizing the emergency procedures. the school district says that the changes will be minimal and there are no plans to add the metal detectors, all coming in the wake of the sandy hook elementary school shooting in connecticut. tomorrow public viewings begin for the annual science fair. yesterday about 200 students from 30 middle schools submitted their experiments for judging, withheld at the randall museum and will begin with a demonstration of liquid nitrogen. the first place winners will go on to the bay -- the first and second place winners will go on to the bay area science fair. which cities made it into the top three healthiest cities.

welcome back. a live look this morning. and the winds are howling up for some of those hills, but we have a great day in stored. mostly sunny skies ranging in the low to mid-60s. several states have been hit with several inches of snow and more is expected for tomorrow. and in boston, crews have been able to fill hot holes for the next round of the freezing temperatures and heavy snow. the snow was good news for the farmers in kansas where the

storm dumped 14 inches. >> it would have been great to have another foot. we need all the moisture to get. and this kind of moisture is just wonderful for the week. >> the storm, they caused delays at airports across the country, but one airline captain went above and beyond to make his passengers comfortable. united express captain played piano for stranded passengers at lambert st. louis international airport. hawk along with 1,700 people were stranded on thursday after 300 flights were canceled because of the bad weather. so hawk decided to pass the time doing what he loves most and that is to play the piano and he played there for about three hours. in texas, about 100 people had to be rescued after getting stranded on the rail here at the dallas zoo. and the train was 20 feet off the ground when they suddenly stopped yesterday. firefighters were called to the scene to help remove the passengers who were touring

african habitats. all passengers were safely brought down to the ground. no word on what caused that malfunction. tomorrow, 13 east bay seniors who lived in the assisted living center could find out if they will be forced to move. the seniors will live at the manor in oakland. the building was foreclosed in november and an attorney for the former operator said that the facility, that the state has ordered the operator to remove the residence. but the new operator said that they are trying to keep the current residence in their home. and they are caught in the middle. many of them have moved out already. and what we have here is some residence who would really like to stay here. >> and a representative for the new facility operators say that they are meeting with the state tomorrow in hopes of getting an emergency license that would allow them to take over the facility. santa cruz have just announced that they are getting ready to offer some free online classes. the university is one of 62 colleges worldwide that have teamed up to offer the free online classes to the public.

it's the latest of the four universities chosen to work with that there. the others are san francisco, irvine, and san francisco. including math, science, biology, and medicines. a list of the healthiest cities of america are out and two bay area cities are in the top three. they ranked 100 cities based on health, quality of life, and fitness. san francisco and san jose were second and third behind boise, idaho. ranking the city based on nutrition, the cost of living and other rates. they will miss today's game between the timberwolves because of back problems. the mri revealed the back spasms, forcing them out of friday's win. and they were caused by a disc in their back. missing the games for this season after having surgery on his ankle. the team is hoping that he will be able to rejoin them at some point during their five-game road trip. and a new report shows that the california workers compensation system awarded three quarters of a billion dollars to injure

beautiful day. >> reporter: good morning to you. and really that sums it up. just dry and pleasant. that's the weather we have in stored for you today. this morning clear, a little cool, breezy in the hills. that's actually stirring some of the cold air out of the area. and mostly sunny skies. temperatures will warm anywhere from 2 to 4 to 6 degrees in some cases for the second half of your day and our extended forecast looks dry. i'm going to bring you the temperatures when we expect those winds to relax coming up. and new this morning as the pope gets ready to step down there is controversy over who will replace him. ktvu alex savage joins us live from san francisco with more on the pope's final days and what's next. alex? >> reporter: well good morning, cathichere at st. mary's cathedral, certainly contemplating the future of the church as pope benedict xvi begins his final farewell. he'll be stepping down in just a matter of days. this is the pamphlet handed out here before they began at 7:30 this morning. inside there was a picture of

the outgoing plaintiff and a write-up history of his time as the head of the catholic church. and the scene inside st. mary's as parishioners gathered this morning. many of them praying for benedict who will enter a secludeed monies tear. >> i thank god. and that we have to pray for that. i think that their prayers will be granted and that's why he's stepping down. >> reporter: the 85-year-old pope gave his final blessing this morning at the vatican and he assured the crowd that he is not abandoning the church. moving forward where he does have the physical and mental strength to continue to lead. one parishioner obviously says that she understands and believes that's the right decision for the pope for the outgoing pope. and there is also talk about his successor as well this

morning. a number of candidates including some from africa, one from canada and one from the u.s. and so the process moving forward is that 120 cardinals will begin to meet in secret in a conclave where they will begin to do that soon. no date has been set so far for that conclave to begin, but they are hoping to have the pope's next successor as i should say chosen before easter. we are live this morning in san francisco, alex savage, ktvu news. a fire in san francisco has displaced six people. that fire started at 11:30. one firefighter told us crews initially went to the wrong streets taking them a little longer to actually get to the scene. three units were damaged. no one was home at the time. and there were no injuries in adjacent buildings of the folks who live there. the cause of the fire still under investigation, but we're told it does not appear to be suspicious. and in another incident in

san francisco, firefighters had to break a window to arrest a man from this building as it was sent to us by a viewer. yesterday's fire there started inside a kitchen on the second floor of that home. the man who was pulled out of the building suffered from smoke inhalation and was rushed to the hospital. arson investigators were called to the scene, but no word yet as the fire was set intentionally and no reports of any damage from the east bay overnight. a magnitude quake hit near fremont at 1:55 this morning. the tremor was four miles deep and five miles from newark. well with a start on the daytona 500 almost here, nascar says that drivers will start their engines as planned. that's despite a big wreck that caused major damage and dozens of injuries at the speedway. >> at 8:00 a.m. with met with nascar. we reviewed all the repairs that we made last evening. we worked late into the evening

and we're prepared to go racing today. >> and that was from a press conference this morning. the daytona international raceway president held that press conference saying that crews fixed the catch fence that's suppose to protect fans. people with tickets in that area can be reseated if they request it. the crash had fans running from their seats and now have everyone talking about fan safety. >> a terrible crash coming to a finish. >> this is a big risk. >> there it is again, at least 33 spectators were hurt when a car driven by the rookie and the elk grove native flew into the fence, sending the tire and large pieces of debris into the crowd. the crash happened when theleader attempted to block another driver for the win. fans released from the hospital overnight are now speaking out about the incident. >> there was a wreck as i got hit by an engine or a part of an engine and i've got a broken leg. >> and all the injured fans,

they are expected to survive, but many are concerned that the fence that is designed to protect them did eir job. the fence was replaced in 2010 and did pass a safety inspection. but they say that they will be sitting down with nascar to try to review what went wrong. minutes after that crash, witnesses uploaded their cell phone video to youtube, but nascar had those videos blocked, which caused a flurry of activity with the social media users. in some of the video you can see fans waiting for help and a race car tire left in the stands. they released it saying it was blocked out of respect for the injured. and now remember that you can watch them run at the daytona 500 following mornings on 2. the program evolution is a look at the unveiling of the new gen 6 cars. then starting at 9, live coverage from daytona. oscar pistorius is not the

only one facing serious charges in his family. his brother, carl, is being accused of homicide for the 2010 death of a female motorcyclist. his trial is expected for the end of march. oscar's is not set to begin until june. a memorial service will be held today for a couple believed to have been the first two victims of the former former los angeles police that hunted them down for revenge. he blamed her dad, a former los angeles police captain for not helping him get back his job with the department. today's service begins at 11:00 this morning at the university where she used to attend. the man hunt continues in las vegas for the gunman accused of killing an oakland rap artist. they believe that the 26-year- old suspect harris shot at a

maserati. the luxury car driven by kenneth cherry jr. cherry and the two people in the taxi were killed. cherry's father said that his son has been unfairly portrayed in the news media. >> he was a victim just like any other victim, being attempted to be carjacked or did something wrong, driving a car and the person got mad at them or jealous of my son. >> cherry's father disputes reports that his son carried a gun in the car. they have located the suspect's car a black range rover, found at the apartment complex just a few blocks from the strip. it is fixing to be one of those days where it is nice to get outside, to take a walk, something. but it is beautiful out there. >> you're right. farmer's market, go for a ride. it'd be a shame to not go out. this morning a little cool. some areas are a lot cooler than where we were yesterday morning. we're drier with mostly clear

skies. what's helping to prevent some of us from really cooling off this morning the wind. where the winds are howling this morning and in some cases, 52 miles per hour. and the gusts reported there over the east bay hills are looking at anywhere from 18 to 20 for oakland. 25 atlas peak and 15 in big rock as we are with winds in our area and our neighborhoods as well. napa, 12 miles per hour for you, but 5 degrees warmer than yesterday morning and meanwhile, they are fairly calm this morning as i have to point out that it is one of the cooler areas in the 24-hour change there and we've got temperatures anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. oakland right now, a light breeze, livermore and a light breeze here as well with the temperatures in the upper 30s. walnut creek. and concord started out in the 30s. an improvement there. 35 for livermore over the north bay where they had the wind all morning long and now 50 degrees. the down sloping winds will be

staying warm as they come down the hill and the depending air that will be heating here as a result as we will see some of that warmer air moving in. 49 for redwood city. into the afternoon we'll continue with the north wind, but they will need to relax a little bit. 45 degrees sunnyvale. as i back up i'll show you why i expect that wind to relax. the system brought us just a little rain in the overnight hours. friday night into saturday and now well off to the east. the ridge of high pressure is building in between the pressures and the differences there. they are really continuing that breeze, but is it a high pressure that will continue to build in over california. it will eventually take control of the weather pattern where the winds are going to relax and that's what you'll see for the afternoon. meanwhile if you plan to head to tahoe, there is an advisory until about 10:00 or noon for some of those areas. so as you get up the hills, the winds are beginning to die down with a good afternoon. here is a look at some of the

changes we're expecting. anywhere from 4 to 5 degrees for most areas. san jose closer to 8 degrees the change. you'll notice that for the afternoon today with a wider look around. 62 for san rafael. and our south bay locations, they are looking good here. 65, 66 morgan hill. 62 in santa cruz. mostly sunny skies. maybe a few high clouds that will be drifting on by. that's really about it. temperatures will be cooler ever so slightly on monday. you may or may not notice it remaining on the chilly side as we start the mornings especially for our cooler inland areas. on tuesday, wednesday, thursday, remaining dry and mild. and mostly sunny, mid to upper 60s in the forecast on thursday. i'll take a look at those lunchtime numbers for you coming up. >> all right, thank you, rosemary. we are just hours away from the biggest night of the year. the academy awards. now down to the finishing touches of the theater where they will start arriving around 4:00 p.m. in the award ceremony,

$400 million. meaning that 70,000 children would be kicked out of the program. they will be on the minds of the nation's governors as they head to the white house tonight. president obama and the first lady will hold the annual governor's dinner. they will be in washington this weekend as they are not just focused on the sequester, but turning their attention to the new federal health care law. he'll attend tonight's dinner and joint other governors for a meeting with the president tomorrow. and now, the big turn on for them and the buyback program was so huge that the event had to be cut short. and the police officers collected 355 firearms including the assault weapons yesterday. and they raise about $255,000 for the event, but giving out per weapon. . that crash quickly ran out. we originally had it to last about four hours. we had to cut this off after two hours and 40 minutes due to

the amount of the tremendous support that we got from the community, bringing the firearms forward. the buyback was organized by east pal alto and other parks. they will protect our kids. donating the money for the program. and the group is trying to find out just how effective the gun buybacks are in reducing crime. the east bay rapper is using twitter to talk art their recent arrest in dublin. he was booked for about instructing the officer released on jail on thursday night. he was in a car that he did not own that had an expired registration. they tapped on the window and asked him if he was on probation or parole. tweeting that he would not answer his question contrary to the personal beliefs that all people of color are not on probation or parole. instead of being bitter, they will take the opportunity to make it a teachable moment.

an eye opener. he is due in court next month. this morning two electrical workers where the burn unit had santa clara burn medical centers, working at the warehouse yesterday when the circuit panel exploded and caught fire. they believe that there was some type of a flash fire. urging them to move forwards. they rejected a permit just a year ago because it was still undecided. the project would help reduce the federal debt, but called the pipeline dangerous and say they would cause environmental damage. they just announced they are getting ready to offer free online classes. the university is just one of 62 college worldwide that have teamed up with them to offer the free online classes to the
